Get on Board with Child Safety is a national child injury
prevention initiative spearheaded by Safety 1st and The
National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions. Our
mission is to educate parents, caregivers, and consumers nationwide
about the changes they can make to prevent unintentional injuries
in and around the home and on the road.
Facts:
- Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for children ages 1-14.
- In 2002, approximately 2,100 children ages 1-14 died
in the home from unintentional injuries. More than 70% of these
deaths occurred among children ages four and under.
- An estimated 40% of deaths and 50% of nonfatal unintentional
injuries among children ages 14 and under occur in and around the
home.
- On average, each year 3.4 million children ages 0-14 are treated in hospital emergency departments for injuries they suffered at home.
- Nearly two-thirds of all injuries among children under age three
requiring emergency department visits occur in the home.
- Falls are the leading cause of non-fatal home injury for children
from birth through age 14.
- The Home Safety Council’s report on The State of Home Safety
in America indicates that for infants, choking and suffocation
is the leading cause of home injury deaths.
